AIDE REITERATES JONATHAN'S INTEREST IN YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

DESPITE the barrage of criticisms that have greeted President Goodluck Jonathan’s policies, his Senior Special Assistant on Youths and Students Affairs, Jude Imagwe, yesterday reiterated Jonathan’s administration’s commitment to investment in youth development because of their importance to nation building.
Imagwe spoke in Benin City when he hosted Youths and student leaders from the Southern part of the country.
He said the President had deliberately evolved policies and programmes geared towards engaging youths in various activities and urged the youths to remain focused and also bring out the best in what they do and stay away from crime and troubles as it was capable of mortgaging their future.
He noted that contrary to general thinking that there is no future for Nigerian youths, with the policies and programmes initiated by Jonathan’s administration, there is hope for youths in the country.
He listed some of the policies and programmes to include YOUWIN and Youths Employment in Agriculture Programme (YEAP).
“In life, we have every right, as growing people, to get ourselves involved or associated with anything that makes us happy.
“But in whatever we do, we must realize that in becoming that man you what to be tomorrow, you must stay alive, because the man you want to be tomorrow, if you had died yesterday, you certainly will not have somebody you want to be like.
“Another thing I want to us to understand is to believe in ourselves. A whole lot of us give up on ourselves. We believe we have tried and had failed.
“Our challenge does not define who we were but it is our hope that makes us who we are. These challenges will always be there but when this hope is strong, it will give us a reason to indentify our challenges.
“Our hope will give us a reason to confront our challenges and our hope will give us the strength to address these challenges and this is what makes us who we are.
“I advice the students to be careful of what they think and the thought they allow to settle in their minds because an issue that is not addressed today, will certainly disgrace you tomorrow.”
The presidential aide however noted that the only way to guarantee the continuity of these policies and programmes of Jonathan transformation agenda is for the youths to vote massively for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2015.

The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Suleiman Abba has said reports from across the country so far indicated that the Christmas was celebrated without any reported case of crime.
Abba, who spoke to newsmen on Thursday at the Jabi Lake Resort after he patrolled round the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, gave God the glory for the incident-free celebration.
“But this will not make us relax,’’ he said. The IG also confirmed that security agencies had continued to receive reports of intended attacks by insurgents but added that the plans had been nipped in the bud.
“But the police, as well as, other agencies involved in law enforcement and security activities have beefed up operations to make sure that people enjoy the festivities.
“This is to make sure that people celebrate with some sense of safety in them. I am happy that quite a number of people are relaxed enjoying themselves.
“We are out to make sure that the places the people are likely to visit, including the roads they use in getting to those places are well secured’’, he said.
Abba promised that the police and other security agencies would put in extra hours of duty to make sure that Nigerians celebrated the Xmas and New Year in safety.
It will be recalled that Abba embarked on aerial patrol/surveillance on Wednesday to the Abuja-Lokoja, Lokoja-Benin, Abuja-Minna and Abuja-Kaduna highways as part of strategies to ensure security during the celebration.

Jonathan to opposition politicians: Nigeria is nobody’s personal estate

PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan
President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday re-echoed his earlier advice to politicians to avoid sowing the seed of discord and hatred through their utterances ahead of the 2015 general elections.
He also reminded opposition politicians that Nigeria does not belong to anyone and cannot be considered anybody’s personal estate.
Speaking at a special Christmas service at St. Mathew’s Anglican Church in Maitama, Abuja, the president reminded politicians of the need to base their campaigns strictly on developmental issues and nothing more.
The president said he was always embarrassed by divisive utterances made by some politicians, noting that those involved in such do not mean well for the country.
“As a politician, you want people to elect you to perform your responsibilities. If you mean well for the country, you wouldn’t be fanning the embers of discord and hatred.
“Nigeria is nobody’s personal estate, but you want to serve. If the people want you to serve, you serve. But if they say no, then leave.
“So, I get embarrassed when we the politicians make provocative statements, statements that create division among Nigerians and that can set this country ablaze,” he said.
He said further, “I don’t think that is what a leader should do; it is not the kind of seed a leader should sow
“Those who take government by violence hardly end well; examples abound in some African countries.
“So, if a politician is interested in power at any level, you don’t sow seed of discord and enmity because it will consume you if you try to.”
Mr. Jonathan thanked religious leaders and followers for their continued prayers for peace and unity for the country especially during this period.
He said the challenges facing the country could have been worse without their prayers.
While describing the security and economic challenges facing the country as temporary, the president assured that “God will surely see the nation through them.”
He urged Christians to continue to imbibe the virtues of peace, love, selflessness and tolerance which Christ epitomise.
The president was accompanied by the First Lady, Patience Jonathan; his mother, Eunice, and members of the Federal Executive Council.
The service, which was presided over by the Primate of the Anglican Church, Nicholas Okoh, was also attended by some past government officials including a former Minister of information, Jerry Gana.
The first lady read the first lesson drawn from Isaiah 9: 2, 6 and 7, while the president took the second reading from Hebrews 1:1 to12.
In a sermon titled “The Jewish Messianic Expectations and 2015 Elections”, Mr. Okoh cautioned that the 2015 election would be a critical period in the country.
He reminded political office seekers at all levels that Nigerians have expectations, which border on peace, freedom, security and general prosperity.
He, therefore, urged both serving and incoming leaders at all levels and arms of government, to be guided by the peoples’ expectations in their decisions.
The clergy man also advised Nigerians to base their voting decisions on common good of all, noting that if they elect people that don’t care, their conditions would be worsened.
On the security challenges facing the country, Mr. Okoh emphasised the need for Nigerians to pray and work together to put “an end to the reproach”.
“We need to stop viewing security issues as politics. It is everyone’s duty to join in the fight against terrorism and rescue our nation,” he said.
The cleric also cautioned vandals of power installations and other national economic saboteurs to desist or face the wrath of God and that of the people.

So many tears this Christmas – Pope

So many tears this Christmas – Pope

Pope Francis kisses a statue of Baby Jesus as he celebrates theChristmas Eve Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica at the Vatican. AP
VATICAN CITY, Philippines – Pope Francis is focusing his attention on all those weeping in the world this Christmas, singling out the refugees, hostages and all those suffering in conflicts in the Middle East, Africa and Ukraine.
On a day that brings joy to little ones in much of the world, Francis expressed anguish for children who are victims of violence, including the recent terrorist attack on a Pakistani military school, or those who are trafficked or forced to be soldiers.
Tens of thousands of Romans and tourists in St. Peter’s Square listened yesterday as the pontiff delivered the Catholic Church’s traditional “Urbi et Orbi” (Latin for “to the city and to the world”) Christmas message from the central balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica.
Francis said: “Truly there are so many tears this Christmas.”
Hours earlier, the pope called for “tenderness” and “warmth” after a violence-plagued year as millions of Christians began marking Christmas.
The Argentine pontiff’s brief homily was replete with Gospel references in his Christmas Eve mass, broadcast live in 3D for the first time.

“Do we have the courage to welcome with tenderness the difficulties and problems of those who are near to us?” the pope asked in Saint Peter’s Basilica, filled with some 5,000 worshippers.
“Or do we prefer impersonal solutions, perhaps effective but devoid of the warmth of the Gospel? How much the world needs tenderness today!” he said.
The leader of the world’s 1.2 billion Roman Catholics also called on “the arrogant, the proud... (and) those closed off to others” to meet life “with goodness, with meekness.”
On Thursday, in his second “urbi et orbi” (to the city and the world) message, the pope was expected to address the plight of Christians and other religious minorities suffering persecution in the Middle East, notably at the hands of the jihadist Islamic State (IS) group.
He was also due to touch on the war in Syria, the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians, the Ebola epidemic, Islamic fundamentalist violence in northeastern Nigeria and the Ukraine conflict.
Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II was expected to pay tribute to the “selflessness” of medical staff and aid workers fighting the Ebola epidemic in her annual Christmas Day broadcast.
In Bethlehem on Christmas Eve, hectic preparations preceded celebrations on the West Bank town’s biggest night of the year, culminating in midnight mass at the Church of the Nativity built over the spot where Christians believe the Virgin Mary gave birth to Jesus.
Scouts playing bagpipes and drums marched to the church in a procession led by Jerusalem’s Latin Patriarch Fouad Twal, the top Catholic cleric in the Holy Land.
In his homily Twal called for “peace in Jerusalem,” where violent clashes between Israelis and Palestinians rocked the city for months, and “equality and mutual respect” among all faiths.
He also asked for the rebuilding of Gaza, which was ravaged this summer during a 50-day war between Hamas and Israel in which more than 2,200 people died.
Outside the church at Manger Square, a man dressed as Santa Claus handed out sweets next to a giant green Christmas tree decorated with red, black and silver baubles – the colors of the Palestinian flag.
But for many faithful across the region, the festivities will be tinged with sadness following a year of bloodshed marked by a surge in the persecution of Christians that has drawn international condemnation.
“For many of you, the music of your Christmas hymns will also be accompanied by tears and sighs,” Pope Francis wrote in a long letter addressed to Christians in the Middle East.
Iraq’s ‘tragic situation’
Francis delivered a Christmas message via telephone to refugees displaced to Iraq’s Kurdish autonomous region.
“Dear brothers, I am close to you, very close to you in my heart,” the pope was quoted as telling the refugees by Italian press agency AGI.
“The children and the elderly are in my heart,” Francis also told the Iraqi refugees in the Ankawa camp.
In Baghdad, Chaldean Patriarch Louis Sako said about 150,000 Christians had been displaced by an offensive spearheaded by the Islamic State group, which has targeted Christians and other minorities, with dozens leaving Iraq each day.
Iraq’s displaced Christians “still live in a tragic situation and there are no quick solutions for them,” Sako told AFP.
In Syria, Christians in the war-torn city of Homs were enjoying their first Christmas in three years in the Hamidiyeh neighborhood, with a brightly colored tree and a manger made from rubble set up in the middle of the ruins.
“Our joy is indescribable,” said Taghrid Naanaa while picking out tree decorations at a shop in the district, which the Syrian army recaptured from rebel fighters this year.
‘Justice for Christmas’
In France, the busy Christmas period has been marred by a series of attacks, including one linked to Islamic extremism, which killed one person and left another 25 wounded.
In the United States, officials scrambled to contain renewed anger after an armed black teenager was shot dead by a white officer in a St. Louis suburb late Tuesday.
On Christmas morning in Australia, church leaders reflected on several tragedies that hit the country this year, including the Sydney cafe siege, where two hostages and the gunman died, the killings of eight children in Cairns and the Malaysia Airlines MH370 and MH17 flight disasters.
In Sierra Leone, all public Christmas festivities were cancelled as a result of the Ebola crisis, with soldiers deployed over the holiday season to prevent spontaneous street celebrations, officials said.
Ahead of the midnight mass in Bethlehem, Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas laid out his own Christmas wish list.
“This Christmas we deliver a very special message to the world: All I want for Christmas is justice,” he said as the Palestinians press a major diplomatic push at the United Nations to seek an end to Israel’s decades-long occupation.

Cristiano Ronaldo threatens to sue over alleged nickname for Lionel Messi

Cristiano Ronaldo has denied that his nickname for rival superstar Lionel Messi is "motherf----r".
The allegation was made in a book, Messi, by respected Spanish journalist Guillem Balague, who said that according to some Real Madrid players, Ronaldo calls the Barcelona star "motherf----r" behind his back and gives the same name to any other Madrid player seen to talking to him.
The Portuguese superstar, via his official Facebook page, has refuted his claim and says he is instructing his lawyers to take action.

Balague says the two rivals are not friends, but are polite, if somewhat cool, to each other in public.

Disfigured man is growing his new face on his chest

Chinese man, who was severely disfigured when he was electrocuted, hopes the growing “head” bulging from his chest will eventually become his new face.
Yan Jianbin sustained serious facial burns and lost an eye and his nose after he opened the door of a high-voltage transformer, according to the Daily Mail.
Doctors at Shenyang Army General Hospital, in Liaoning Province, began a procedure six months ago to stretch the skin on his chest by injecting saline water to create a head-shaped mound.
Plastic surgeons plan to create new facial features and then attach the stretched skin to his face in a five stage procedure that will take two years to complete.
The first two stages of the groundbreaking procedure involves creating a new nose using part of his rib cartilage.
In the third phase, they will create new blood vessels and arteries.
The fourth phase will be the face transplant. The final phase will consist of fine-tuning the new face.

4G Speeds Average Over 15Mbps in UK

4G Speeds Average Over 15Mbps in UK
On Thursday, Ofcom revealed its first ever 4G research report citing average 4G speeds twice as fast as their 3G counterparts.

In its research, Ofcom looked at the performance of 3G and 4G services on smartphones from the UK's four main mobile operators - EE, O2, Three, and Vodafone - across five major UK cities - Birmingham, Edinburgh, Glasgow, London, and Manchester - between March and June 2014. "Helping to improve mobile coverage and quality of service are important objectives for Ofcom," said the company in a statement. "Today's report is intended to help consumers understand differences in performance between 3G and 4G, and this kind of research is designed to support consumers in choosing a service that best suits their needs. The findings are also expected to encourage providers to improve their performance."

"Our results show that, on average, UK 4G networks perform much better than 3G networks," said Ofcom. "These differences are consistent across all mobile operators, and we would expect consumers to notice material differences in the performance of mobile broadband when using any 4G network compared to a 3G network." Of the networks, EE offered the fastest 4G speeds across the five cities at 18.4 Mbps while London had the fastest 4G web browsing speeds of all the cities. Three, the only operator offering 4G for free, lagged behind in 4G speeds; in the three month period, Three's average 4G speeds were just 10.7 while EE's average was 18.4. Glasgow's average 4G web browsing speeds were the lowest of the five cities, taking 0.82 seconds to load a web page, while London's average was just 0.72 seconds to load a standard web page.

The Nexus Six Creates Controversy With Mixed Reviews For Google's Fabulous Phablet

The Nexus Six Creates Controversy With Mixed Reviews For Google's Fabulous Phablet

Ask for the opinions of six different reviewers on a smartphone, and you’re likely to hear six different opinions. That’s true of Google’s latest smartphone, the Nexus 6.
The ‘vanilla’ Android handset, running a pure version of Google’s mobile operating system and vision, has been reviewed by a number of online publications this week, and while there are some areas where opinions match up, others are a little bit more subjective.
The Difference Is Clear
Let’s start with Forbes’ review of the Nexus 6 from Gordon Kelly, and the physical characteristics of the handset. It’s a big handset, and while you can argue if it should be labelled a phablet or not, there’s no doubt that the screen is the most attractive element of this handset.
Perhaps the main reason potential Nexus 6 owners are prepared to suffer the inconvenience of its huge form factor is its mammoth screen and here Motorola has delivered in spades. Simply put, the Nexus 6 screen is jaw dropping. The extra size is noticeable against it rivals, particularly the iPhone 6 Plus, and Motorola has done an incredible job in slimming down the bezels. With the exception of the LG G3, no other smartphone comes close and it makes you appreciate what a superb job the company has done to keep the form factor as small as it has.
Rob Pegoraro is not so sure that the screen size is the answer that the sales team are looking for. Over on Venture Beat he notes the screen size ‘madness’ and points out a number of ergonomic and UI issues because of the size:
It’s not that you can’t stash the Motorola-built 6 in a pants pocket (at least if we’re talking dad jeans) or a shirt pocket (although the way it protrudes by over an inch makes it the pocket protector of phones). But working this thing with one hand …requires awkward, uncomfortable contortions. I had to roll and pitch the phone in my hand to get my thumb to reach icons and onscreen keys along its far side, and I kept worrying that this back-and-forth would launch the thing towards the sidewalk.
And where other enormophone vendors have customized Google’s operating system to exploit that expanded screen real estate, the Nexus 6 sticks to stock Android 5.0 Lollipop. For once, that’s not a virtue in a Nexus device.
The bottom line in terms of the screen and the size of the Nexus 6 is that you really should get it in your hand before you consider a purchase. With prices starting at $649 SIM Free, the Nexus 6 is a long-term investment, and while it does rival devices like the iPhone 6 Plus and the Samsung Galaxy Note 4, it does have some issues in the physical department that the rivals have tweaked away.
