Match-Fixing Claims Damage Scotland Friendly

Story Highlight

The Scotland versus Nigeria fixture is already devalued.
The Scotland versus Nigeria fixture is already devalued.
Who, now, will not watch it and wonder if they can believe in everything they see?
That a soft tackle, an open goal missed or a fluffed attempt at a save isn't the result of a brown envelope delivery to a team hotel?
The spectre of match-fixing will haunt any sporting contest, given the slightest encouragement.
It's not clear what form that encouragement has taken with regard to the Scotland v Nigeria game, but it has damaged the fixture in a way Fifa will not want repeated in the World Cup.
It would kill the tournament and the game itself would struggle to recover.
Brazil will host hundreds of players. All top professionals, but many with no chance of victory and no prospect of earning the millions pocketed by the likes of Suarez, Gerrard and Messi.
What would be a result for them in Brazil? For some, maybe it would be ten thousand dollars in their back pocket from a gambling syndicate in the Far East. The player who might ask himself: why not?
Hopefully, a voice in his head would tell him to consider the victims. I count myself among them.
I'm currently reading the excellent book by Richard Gordon - "Scotland '74: A World Cup Story."
It reveals suspicions among Scotland players surrounding the score line that sealed their first round exit - the 9-0 defeat of Zaire by Yugoslavia.
There is no evidence that the match was fixed but, 40 years on, the doubts of the dressing room raise questions.
At a criminal level, there are serious matters that should, perhaps, have been addressed.
But beyond that are the hopes and dreams of the Tartan Army of the day.
Could that dream team with Billy Bremner, Denis Law et al have got closer to the trophy, as close as we all thought they might? Were they as good as we thought they were?
I suppose we'll never know. We'll never know if they simply weren't good enough because now we think they might have been thwarted by cheats.
Maybe we could have been World Cup winners... let the torture of '74 begin. Again.
A victimless crime? No way. Match-fixing kills the dream. And if you kill the dream, you kill football.

LEADER OR RULER

Until the life of every Nigerian begins to matter, we will never win the war on terror. For far too long, we have served as pawns in the bloody game of politics by our politicians, we have become canon fodder, expendable and worse, collateral damage. Our lives hve no meaning, everyday we live in terror, dying like chickens in the street. For how long will we live under dis yoke? We do...

5 things on Van Gaal's to-do list at Man United

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — New Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has been bequeathed a team in transition and lacking in self-belief after the club's worst Premier League season.
Here are five things that will likely be on the Dutchman's to-do list once he takes charge after the World Cup:
___
DEFINE UNITED'S IDENTITY
One of Europe's most bold, attacking and vibrant teams for much of Alex Ferguson's long reign, United completely lost its identity under David Moyes and became a soft touch.
Long balls, no pace to attacks and a lack of goals from midfield were the hallmarks of the Moyes era — and it was a turn-off for fans.
Van Gaal is committed to an attacking and entertaining style, with sharp passing, possession and pressing of opposition key to his philosophy. For that reason, he can be seen as creating the formula adopted by the current Barcelona and Bayern Munich teams.
___
ACT FAST
This is one of the most critical summers in United's recent history. Van Gaal and vice chairman Ed Woodward cannot afford to blunder in the transfer market as the club did last year when Moyes acted late and indecisively, landing only Marouane Fellaini in the last few minutes of deadline day.
United has considerable sums to spend but isn't in the Champions League next season, making it a harder sell to the world's best players. United possibly needs four or five signings if the team is to challenge for the league title again next season.
___
CENTER MIDFIELDER
United has been crying out for a top-class central midfielder with leadership and dynamism ever since the departure of Roy Keane in 2005.
They are rare breed and extremely difficult to find, but Van Gaal will desperately need one.
The current quartet of Fellaini, Michael Carrick, Darren Fletcher and Tom Cleverley lacks presence, movement or a goal threat — between them, they scored only twice in all competitions this season.
Van Gaal's game plan revolves around a passing game in midfield and that couldn't happen with the incumbents.
___
REBUILD DEFENSE
With Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand definitely leaving and Patrice Evra also likely to be on his way out, the defensive rocks United has relied on for the past decade will not be available for Van Gaal.
It leaves him a raw back four of Rafael da Silva, Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Alexander Buttner. Jones — potentially a future England captain if played regularly at center back — may be the only one retained by the Dutchman, who will no doubt want ball-players at the back.
___
REVIVE HOME FORM
Old Trafford needs to return to being a fortress — the "Theatre of Dreams" has become a theater of nightmares.
United lost seven times at home in the Premier League this season, with Sunderland, Newcastle and West Bromwich Albion among the teams to come away with three points.
Swansea also won there in the FA Cup.
Visiting sides no longer fear coming to United — Van Gaal must change that.

His public plea for Paula! Robin Thicke took to the stage at the 2014 Billboard Music Awards on Sunday, May 18 -- not once, but twice! -- to profess his love for his estranged wife Paula Patton.
In his latest public attempt to win Patton back, the "Blurred Lines" singer, 37, first made his latest sentiments known as he accepted the award for Best R&B Single. Sporting a buzzed haircut and black leather jacket, Thicke gushed, "Most importantly, I'd like to thank my wife for her love and support, and for putting up with me for all these years."

The high school sweethearts announced their split back in February in a joint statement. "We will always love each other and be best friends," the parents to 3-year-old son Julian told Us Weekly. Following their split, a source told Us: "Robin wanted to save their marriage, but it was Paula's choice and she ended it."

Thicke, later at the Billboard Music Awards, returned to the stage to perform his new single, "Get Her Back," which he had written for his wife. As reported by Us, the R&B hitmaker wanted to swap his normally-flashy performance style for a more low-key, heartfelt delivery Sunday evening.

"Alright, y'all, help me get her back," Thicke said to the crowd. With his eyes glistening, Thicke launched into his song featuring lyrics like, "I gotta treat her right" and "I'm gonna go get her, go get her, go get her, go get her back." He then asked the crowd to put their hands together, as he fell onto his knees and belted out from his heart, "I gotta get her, I gotta get a girl tonight."
A source told Us that Thicke "was in a good mood rehearsing it." Added the insider, "He had lots of energy."

LONDON — Tens of thousands of raucous Arsenal fans filled the streets of Islington in north London on Sunday to hail their team’s comeback victory in Saturday’s Football Association (FA) Cup final.
On the capital’s hottest day of the year, manager Arsene Wenger and his squad laughed, danced and waved during a celebratory open-top bus tour.
Arsenal recovered from two goals down in the opening eight minutes to defeat Hull City 3-2 after extra time at Wembley and lift their first trophy in nine years. Their previous success came after beating Manchester United 5-4 on penalties in the 2005 final.
Wenger, who said it was the most important win of his career, had signalled that he was also set to stay at the club following the imminent expiry of his contract, but there was no official statement to confirm that he will extend his 18 years’ in charge.
"This trophy is for him," match-winning goal scorer Aaron Ramsey told Sky Sports News. "He’s backed us and stood by us and he is so instrumental in the way we play."
Wenger, soaked in champagne and given "the bumps" by his players on Saturday, was once again dressed in his pristine uniform — of white shirt and black trousers — as he smiled for photographs.
His team’s success had not only ended the club’s second-longest spell without success since 1930, but also answered critics, including Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho, who had labelled Wenger a "specialist in failure".
The parade included a pause for the squad to visit Islington Town Hall and pose for photographs with the mayor and staff before continuing to a red and white ticker tape reception with thousands of fans at the club’s Emirates Stadium.
"The happiness is linked sometimes with the suffering, and the time you have to wait, and that’s why it’s such a great moment," said Wenger, who has won the FA Cup five times with Arsenal.
In less sober style, his players shared a microphone to perform an impromptu karaoke of football anthems. Lanky German defender Per Mertesacker’s rendition of Arsenal Till I Die triggered an impassioned chorus as past impatience was set aside and a new era of hope ushered in.
Ramsey insists Arsenal’s dramatic victory will be the springboard for more glory now that the Gunners have finally ended their trophy drought.
"Absolutely. This is what it is all about, getting to Wembley and winning trophies," he said.
"You could see what it meant to the players, the staff, the manager and the fans. I’m determined to get back to a final and win more silverware next season. Being in the final and lifting the trophy at the end of it is what you work for all season. It’s what you dream about doing since you were a young kid. I’m over the moon to have scored the winner but more importantly I’m over the moon to win the trophy and hopefully this will be the first of many."
While the victory was a cathartic moment for everyone associated with Arsenal, it was especially sweet for Ramsey, who has overcome a series of disappointments to prove his worth.

NO BIG DEAL IN DIRECTORS SLEEPING WITH ACTRESSES -ANIEDI NOBA

Aniedi Awah Noba isn’t a name that would cause a stir because it is a face that works behind the cameras. But the man, like most directors are the ones who pull the strings and oftentimes dictate the tunes to which the actors must dance.
For Aniedi, he doesn’t believe the sexual harassment issue is a big deal. To him, it is a question of two adults, meeting up and making up their minds to make out.
“If a director is a man and the actress is a woman and they find themselves attracted to each other, they’re permitted to do anything because they are adults. Where it becomes bad is when one person puts a gun on the other person’s head and make unhealthy demands through some blackmail.

Sexual issues are not things you can really predict because they are human related. Anybody can sleep with anybody anywhere in the world as far as it’s an agreeable venture. So if I’m a director and I see an actress and I say I want to sleep with you and the actress agrees I don’t see anything wrong with that.
Where it becomes bad is when I say I will not give you a job until I sleep with you. Now, we over-flog this issue of directors sleeping with actresses. A man will meet a woman anywhere, any day and they will sleep with each other. Let anybody sleep with anybody they want, life goes on. Let’s just do the work” he asserted

The Great Deception in the American Church

The Great Deception in the American Church

deception
What's at the root of the deception in the American church?
Consider these statistics of Christianity in America. Eighty-four percent of the inhabitants of this nation say they believe in the deity of Jesus Christ, according to Barna Group, and 45 percent claim to be born again Christians. Other studies show it is closer to thirty-three percent.
Either way, these numbers are high. Seventy-seven percent believe their chances of going to heaven are excellent. Thirty-three percent believe one day everyone will go to heaven. Yet America has the highest percentage of single-parent families in the industrialized world, the highest abortion rate, the highest rate of sexually transmitted diseases, the highest rate of teenage birth by far, the highest rate of teenage drug use, and the largest prison population per capita than any country in the world.
Consider also the great moral decline of the last generation (50 to 60 years) and these telling statistics in America. The divorce rate has doubled, teen suicide has tripled, reported violent crime has quadrupled, the prison population has quintupled, the percentage of babies born out of wedlock has risen six-fold, couples living together out of wedlock have increased sevenfold, and gay marriage is now a legalized reality in a number of states, and many believe the end is not in sight.
In this past generation we have experienced an overwhelming increase in lawlessness, permissiveness, and selfishness, even among Christians. Moral actions that were unthinkable a few decades ago are now commonplace: Christian leaders indulging in sexual sin and grossly immoral scandals, addicted to pornography, accompanied by an exploding divorce rate have greatly factored in the rapid decrease of morals in the American church. And as the church goes, so goes the world. In fact, the results of a survey among young American adults showed that the percentage who follow biblically based values for living has now dropped from 65 percent to a mere 4 percent since World War II.
There has never been a society in the history of mankind whose moral values have deteriorated so dramatically, in such a short period of time, as those of Americans in the last 50 years. And so far, it shows no sign of stopping. These statistics are eye opening and they serve to warn us that something is terribly wrong with our brand of Christianity. They reveal how poorly the church has communicated the true gospel to mainstream America, and thus the reason for so much deception in our culture.
When the rich man died and went to Hades (see Luke 16:19-31) he was surprised to find himself there. In the Jewish culture they equated wealth with godliness, so this man thought God favored him. The common thought, especially among the Jews, was if you were blessed financially then you were a good person, and therefore favored by God, and on your way to heaven. This also explains the disciples' astonishment when Jesus told them how hard it was for the rich to enter the kingdom of heaven (see Matt. 19:25).
Similarly, there was a church in Laodicea (see Rev 3:14-22), who due to their wealth, thought they too had attained God's favor. Jesus expressed great disapproval over their spiritual condition as well, which they were totally unaware of. They were deceived.
Are you in touch with your true spiritual condition? Or are you allowing the pop culture around you to dictate your standards? Are you conforming to the world's standards or to the Bible? Are you deceived? How can a nation of people among whom a large percentage claims to be "born-again" Christians experience the kind of degradation the above statistics reveal? Such deception is the state of America today, and the above statistics reveal the fruit of it.
The problem has been that the real gospel has not been preached nor lived. Both the profession and the practice of many so-called Christians in this nation have not matched up. Our substandard message has produced substandard believers. Our departure from the preaching of the cross, repentance, holiness, and the real empowering grace of God has increased the level of deception in the church. How else can we explain the disparity of the above statistics in the church and the nation?
But what is really at the root of this deception? This is what we need to carefully discern. In one word, it is humanism, the glorification of self. Humanism has crept into much of the modern day Church and is diluting the power of the real gospel. To be continued...

“I’m Still Hungry” – Olamide

I’m Still Hungry” – Olamide
Olamide 324  By Gistmaster,
Olamide is hilarious and fans that attended star music trek show in Benin said they got a good dosage of his humour. The entertainer who is making fame and fortune at the speed of light in the Nigerian entertainment industry know how to get his fans in the dancing mood and at the same time have a good laugh.
It’s been a superlative year for rap star,Olamide popularly called Badoo by fans as he captures one laurel after the other and performing before thousands of fans at Star Music Trek is no mean feat.
However, despite the fame and fortune, the young artiste, still feels he has a lot to achieve.
At a quick stop over at Vibes FM, Benin in preparation for his performance at Star Music Trek at Ogbe Stadium Benin, the star revealed the one thing many fans misconstrue about him.

Marriage Is Not For Me-Yeni Kuti

In a new interview with SunNewsonline, daughter of late creator of Afrobeat, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, currently in her early 50s, who has seen and done it all, says she is still single because she has lost all interest in marriage and doesn’t believe in the institution any more.
Excerpts:
MARRIAGE
I am still single because I have lost all interest in marriage and I don’t believe in the institution any more. Nigerian men are too controlling and overbearing for me and I am already set in my ways. Besides, I have been on my own for too long. My major concern is training my daughter.
I praise married women; I think they are the real stars of this country. Women in their husbands house looking after their husbands and children are amazing especially the ones with nine to-five jobs who come back home tired and still go to the kitchen to cook for their husbands. These are the women that women magazines should be celebrating because they are the real super women.
Men are not easy to look after; I can’t do that so I duff my hat for such women. When my only child clocked two, I was separated from my ex-husband. I am now in my 50’s and I am not thinking about having another child and I have no regrets. I don’t believe in having kids with everyman that comes my way. Maybe I could have had more kids if I had re-married but since I never remarried there was no need for me to have more kids. My marriage didn’t work because we couldn’t get on together after two years. Right now my daughter is the most important person in my life. I am still single and I have found a suitable man but right now, marriage is the last thing on my mind. Yes, it is true that you never can say never because things happen. But if ever I want to get married again, you will be the first to know.
SEXUAL HARRASEMENT
You know as women, some of us have tried one way or the other to outsmart men. I was a player as a young girl so I won’t say I have been sexually harassed because I was the one that tried to play men for their money you know. I have had men that have spoilt me silly with gifts and money. And I knew I was just a flirt; I was just playing them. The men took us out for lunch and we just spent their money. My friend used to come along when I went on dates and I went with her when she had dates; we would eat and drink and the men usually gave us some money when we were about to leave. You know N500 was a lot of money back then. I remember that those days, a car was going for N3, 000.
So there was this particular instance when we wanted to do the same thing with my friend’s date. The meeting point was one of the rooms at the Eko Hotel & Suites. When we got there we knocked on the door, he answered and we entered. He was lying on the bed but left the door unlocked so he would not have to get up to open the door when we came in. He is a popular man so I don’t want to mention his name. When he removed the sheets he was stark naked and we were shocked! He started chasing us around the room; he would chase my friend and then me. When we eventually found our way out of his hotel room we ran straight home. I couldn’t tell my mum what happened. But I told my sister, brother and our friends and they all laughed at us. We were greedy young women who happened on a very wicked man.
No man has ever asked me for sex for favours. Maybe they are too scared of me because of my father and brother; they probably know they will sing about it. Even with Felebration, no sponsor has ever asked me for anything; they just sponsor; maybe it’s because of my family background.

Sudanese Woman Sentenced to Death After Marrying Christian

Sudanese Woman Sentenced to Death After Marrying Christian

A Sudanese woman who was born to a Muslim father was sentenced to death by hanging for marrying a Christian man

A pregnant 27-year-old Sudanese woman was sentenced to death by hanging Thursday for apostasy after marrying a Christian man and refusing to convert to Islam. Mariam Yahia Ibrahim Ishag also faces charges of adultery.
Ibrahim, who was born to a Muslim father but raised Orthodox Christian by her mother, was first sentenced on Sunday, but she was given until Thursday to change her mind and convert. She refused to do so, Al Jazeera reports.
“I am a Christian and I never committed apostasy,” Ibrahim said.
Ibrahim was found guilty of apostasy — the abandonment of one’s religious faith – because she was born to a Muslim father and married a Christian man. The adultery charge came as Islamic law prohibits Muslim women from marrying outside of their religion, a rule which effectively voided the marriage.
The death sentence will reportedly be carried out after Ibrahim gives birth.
Western embassies and human rights groups have urged Sudan to let Ibrahim choose her religion freely. Following the verdict, about 50 people protested against the sentence outside the courtroom.

Sources: Donald Sterling Refuses to Pay NBA Fine, Threatens Litigation

L.A. Clippers owner Donald Sterling has reportedly hired prominent antitrust litigator Maxwell Blecher, who has written a letter to the NBA's general counsel about denying any wrongdoing and rejecting the league's fine, following Sterling's leaked racist comments

Sports Illustrated is reporting that L.A. Clippers owner Donald Sterling is poised to unleash renowned antitrust litigator Maxwell Blecher in order to avoid being reprimanded by the NBA.
The 80-year-old property tycoon has been slapped with a $2.5 million fine and ordered to sell the team — eliminated from the playoffs by the Oklahoma City Thunder on Thursday — after his racist rant was leaked to the media.
Sources told SI.com that Blecher filed a letter on Sterling’s behalf to NBA executive vice president and general counsel Rick Buchanan. The missive denies any wrongdoing, argues “no punishment is warranted” and warns that the controversy “will be adjudicated,” suggesting a lengthy legal battle could lie ahead.
“We reject your demand for payment,” the letter tells Buchanan, basing its assertions on two key points: first, that Sterling has not violated any article of the NBA constitution, and second, that his “due-process rights” have not been met.

Jonathan cancels Chibok visit

Jonathan cancels Chibok visit

President Goodluck Jonathan
President Goodluck Jonathan has called off a visit to the town where more than 200 schoolgirls were abducted, officials say.
Sources had told the BBC he would stop in Chibok, in the north-east, on his way to a conference in France on the threat from Boko Haram militants.
But the visit was called off for security reasons, the officials said.
The president – under pressure over his government’s failure to rescue the girls – will fly direct to Paris.
The BBC’s Gabriel Gatehouse in Nigeria says the cancellation of this visit underlines just how fragile the security situation is in the north-east.
On Thursday, relatives of the girls called for their unconditional release by Boko Haram.
Jonathan is said to have ruled out negotiations over a possible release of prisoners.
Nothing was seen of the girls for almost a month after they were taken from Chibok.
But on Monday the group released a video showing more than 100 of them and offering an exchange for prisoners.
UK Africa Minister Mark Simmonds said Jonathan had “made it very clear that there will be no negotiation” at a meeting on Wednesday.
President Jonathan has been criticised for not visiting the town – more than a month after the girls were seized.
The president will travel to Paris to take part in a summit convened by French President Francois Hollande to discuss Boko Haram.
The leaders of Nigeria’s neighbours – Benin, Cameroon, Niger and Chad – are scheduled to attend the summit on Saturday, which will also include representatives from the UK, US and EU.
A statement said delegates at the meeting will “discuss fresh strategies for dealing with the security threat posed by Boko Haram and other terrorist groups in west and Central Africa”.

FIFA boss Sepp Blatter says controversial awarding of 2022 World Cup to Qatar was 'mistake'

FIFA boss Sepp Blatter says controversial awarding of 2022 World Cup to Qatar was 'mistake'

Posted 1 hour 14 minutes ago
Awarding the 2022 soccer World Cup to Qatar was a "mistake" and the tournament will probably have to be held in the winter because of the heat, FIFA president Sepp Blatter has said.
"Of course, it was a mistake. You know, one comes across a lot of mistakes in life," he told Swiss television station RTS in an interview.
"The Qatar technical report indicated clearly that it is too hot in summer, but the executive committee with quite a big majority decided all the same that the tournament would be in Qatar," he added.
Asked whether the World Cup was likely to be held in the European winter, the 78-year-old replied: "It's probable, yes. In fact, it's more than probable."
FIFA launched an investigation last year into alleged corruption surrounding the voting procedure for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, awarded to Russia and Qatar respectively.
The choice of Qatar was particularly controversial given that the small Arab nation has little footballing culture and summer temperatures can exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit (40 Celsius).
FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke said in January that the 2022 World Cup would not be played in the summer months but was likely to be held between November and January.
The soccer body has said no decision will be taken until after this year's World Cup finals in Brazil with all stakeholders and commercial partners to be consulted.
Blatter was adamant oil and gas-rich Qatar had not "bought" the World Cup, however, and indicated political pressure from France and Germany had played a part.
"I will never say they (Qatar) bought it," he said.
"We know full well that big French and German companies work in Qatar, but they don't just work for the World Cup. The World Cup is only a small part of what is going on in Qatar."
Asked about his future at the helm of FIFA, Blatter again indicated he would stand for a fifth term in next year's election.
"At the moment I say I want to finish my mandate well. Of course I am willing to continue," he said.
