Nigeria: Why We Have Been Away for So Long - Danfo Drivers

The duo of Mountain Black and Mad Melon of Danfo Drivers (real names Jimoh Olotu and Omeofa Oghene respectively), better known by hit single 'I am a Danfo Driver, Suo' are back after a long absence from the music scene. The youngsters who sing Ajegunle's Galala brand of music have been chequered by many challenges and they tell all in this chat with Weekend Groove:
Is it true that two of you have parted ways?
No, we didn't split, we only quarrelled, but we are still together. And we are still alive, so, no shaking. What actually happened was that we went to school to further our education because we believe education is the key to ultimate success.
Also, we've been going round for musical tour; first one was in Mali, followed by another one in Portharcourt. We also performed during the Portharcourt carnival.
Presently, we are fully back to the music scene and very soon we will be dropping our new album and that will be in two months' time as we are still working on it.
Fans have been worried over your absence on the music scene. What has been happening to you two?
Yeah, what happened was that we had a contract with Cornerstone, our record label and we agreed on a certain percentage as part of the deal. But when we were away in Mali for a Peace concert and in Portharcourt for another show during the last election, someone notified us that our marketter was printing our songs and selling it. That's piracy, and we weren't happy about it because we were not told and carried along.
So, when we got back to Lagos we confronted the marketer, who explained to us that it was our record label who gave the go-ahead. We felt cheated and angry, and we decided to break our contract with them. Now, we are coming up with our own record label to be known as 'Danfo Drivers records' and hopefully, it will be launched in the next two months or thereabout.
Concerning your misunderstanding with the marketer, what was your conclusion with him?
Of course it was a breach of contract and piracy and we took them to court but later we had to drop the case because we got tired of the case being adjourned every time.
But could this misunderstanding with your record label be another reason why you were away from the music scene?

A former White House lawyer in both Bush administrations was convicted Friday of attempted murder and other charges in the beating of his wife at their Connecticut home four years ago.
John Michael Farren, 61, who also was once general counsel for Xerox Corp., was allowed to sit out his trial after he said he wouldn't be able to handle the stress of it. But he was in the courtroom Friday when the jury returned guilty verdicts on charges of attempted murder, first-degree assault and risk of injury to a child.
Prosecutors allege Farren choked Mary Margaret Farren and beat her with a metal flashlight until she lost consciousness at their multimillion dollar home in New Canaan in January 2010. She managed to flee the house with her two young daughters. The attack occurred two days after she served him with divorce papers, authorities say.
Farren disputed the seriousness of the charges. He also tried to use a mental health defense, but a judge didn't allow it. He faces up to 50 years in prison at his sentencing, set for Sept. 11.
The verdicts came on the second day of jury deliberations and followed three days of testimony in Stamford Superior Court this week. Mary Margaret Farren, who suffered broken bones in her jaw and cheek and other injuries from the attack, testified Monday.
"He was on top of me and he was squeezing my neck, strangling me, and slamming my head ... into the floor," she said. "He said, 'I'm killing you.'"
In a civil lawsuit, she won a $28.6 million judgment against her ex-husband for her injuries.
Farren was general counsel at Xerox in 2007 when he was named deputy White House counsel during George W. Bush's second term. He served as undersecretary for international trade in the Commerce Department under Bush's father, President George H.W. Bush. He also was deputy manager for the elder Bush's 1992 re-election campaign and deputy director for his transition team in 1989.

This is certainly not the best of times for Genevieve Nnaji. Recently, she was quoted to have said she doesn’t think she can “return to the blandness and mediocrity that characterised Nollywood in the past”. That ‘simple’ statement did go on to brew a storm in the entertainment industry, as her fans and colleagues descended on her for kicking the industry that ‘made’ her.
Movie director, Mac Collins Chidebe was one of the unimpressed. “Genevieve has just insulted the industry that made her who she is today. Really, what effort has she made to help improve Nollywood? Those days in Enugu when Genevieve was growing in Nollywood, our movies were not rubbish; she has grown now, made money, fame, popularity etc., how much has she invested in this Industry that made her?” he queried.

Recently, Beyoncé changed the lyrics to the song "Resentment" during her "On The Run" tour performance. The songstress changed the number of years from "six" to "twelve" when she sang it, to imply the infidelity of her husband Jay-Z.
Her small change to the song seems to be insignificant at first, but when compared to her marriage of 12 years to Jay-Z, it says a lot. Recent reports claim that singer Mya is allegedly Jay-Z's mistress, but she has since denied the rumors, "Never did, never was, never will. Illegitimate thirsty sources with no facts and that's the "media" for you - especially today," she wrote told fans.

"I play second to no one, pay my own bills, have my own label, own management company, rely on God only and respect myself & marriage way too much for nonsense. False rumors are crafted for ratings & numbers. And miserable, unhappy people need someone to judge to deter the attention away from their own misery and feel better about their miserable lives. On the other hand, it is reported that Beyoncé changed the lyrics for her own personal agenda, "to keep Jay-Z in check" and to boost ticket sales for the "On The Run" tour.
"Beyoncé is very calculated in everything that she does and by changing the lyrics to her song it did two very important things...One was to keep Jay Z in check and two was to create some buzz for the tour to sell tickets. If people are going to talk about their relationship and the highs and lows, like everything else in her life she wants complete control and she wants all the advantages from it," said a source from Hollywood Life.
