Buhari can’t remember his phone number –Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan
President Goodluck Jonathan on Friday during a rally in Enugu said that the All Progressives Congress candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd), cannot remember his own mobile phone number.
Jonathan, whose unscripted address was mostly a response to previous statements made by Buhari, accused the APC presidential candidate of deceiving Nigerians by promising to revive the economy without explaining how he would achieve the feat.
The President wondered how Buhari would develop the country’s economy, a feat he could not achieve while he was in office as head of state between 1983 and 1985.
“Is it now that Buhari cannot even remember his own phone number that he can change the economy of the country.” Jonathan asked.
The Peoples Democratic Party presidential candidate said that although he did not like to “go personal during campaigns,” “sometimes circumstances demand that certain things must be said.”
Jonathan said that Buhari belonged to the medieval age, adding that he (the APC candidate) intended to run the Federal Government as a medieval king.
He said, “We cannot run the government as if we are in the medieval age; we cannot run a government where somebody said he would throw people into jail.
“You are not a medieval king – a medieval king can throw you into jail but we have to follow the rule of law because we cannot go back to the old days.”
Jonathan, however, read the speech made by Gen. Ibrahim Babangida (rtd.) after overthrowing Buhari’s regime through a military coup on August 27, 1985 to justify his claim that the APC candidate does not keep his promises.
Babangida, in the portions of the address read by Jonathan, justified Buhari’s overthrow by pointing out that the latter did not live up to the promises he made to Nigerians when he ousted a democratically elected civilian government headed by Alhaji Shehu Shagari in a military coup.
Noting that Buhari “deceived Nigerians” from 1983 to 1985, Jonathan quoted Babangida as saying, “The initial objectives of Buhari’s intervention were betrayed as there was a general deterioration of standard of living in the country.”
The PDP candidate also pointed out that Babangida accused Buhari of being “too rigid in his attitude to national issues” and “became alienated from the people” in the course of his stay in power.
He, therefore, challenged Buhari to tell Nigerians how he intends to revive the economy.
Jonathan said, “They are telling young Nigerians that they are going to change the economy but they have not told us how they want to manage the economy more than us.
“If they say they want to change agriculture, they should tell us the weak links in the agriculture value chain and what they want to do about it.
“I said in Lagos that I want to work with young people, not to deceive people.
“I am not going to run the government based on my habits, I am going to run the government according to global best practices.”
Jonathan also insisted that he was committed to the campaign against corruption.
“There is no government that has fought corruption more than we do,” he said, noting that some previous administrations pretended to be fighting corruption while oppressing their enemies.
He recalled that Buhari jailed some prominent Igbo politicians while in office as head of state, including former Vice-President Alex Ekwueme and former governor of old Anambra State, Chief Jim Nwobodo.
Stressing that Buhari jailed politicians on trumped up charges, Jonathan said, “You can no longer carry people and put them in prison for 301 years.”
The President equally accused Buhari of having a wrong idea of corruption.
According to him, Buhari believes that every wealthy Nigerian is corrupt.
He said, “If a Nigerian businessman has a private jet, then you are corrupt but if a South African has a private jet then you commend him.
“If you have a good house, then you are corrupt, if you have a good car then you are corrupt – that is his definition of corruption.”
Jonathan accused his opponent of making spurious claims against him.
The President said, “They are saying that government is corrupt but they are not telling us what they are going to do to stop corruption. Let them go back to their consultants to coach them, then I will listen to them.
“They should tell us how they are going to manage the economy better than we do.
“They are saying we stole foreign reserves, nobody can steal foreign reserves – spurious allegations.”
He also reiterated his claim that Buhari did not equip the military while he was the head of state.
Jonathan said that he had done more than his predecessors to shore up the country’s defence.
“For 30 years, we had only one frigate, now we have four additional frigates,” he said.
In the same vein, he pointed out that Buhari did not find any woman worthy enough for appointment when he was the military head of state.
The President asked Nigerians to assess him and Buhari by looking at how they performed during their respective periods in office.
He said, “They have deceived us before and they want to deceive us again.
“Go and find out whether these people are deceiving you or are telling you the truth.
“People are assessing me because I have run this country for some years – they have run this country for two years.
“They came with promises but immediately they came in, what they did was to jail Jim Nwobodo for 201 years.”

Nigeria and USA flags

WorldStage Newsonline-- The United States (US) on Friday said that though Nigeria might be in a challenging time, there is no sign that it will break up in 2015 as asserted in some quarters.
US Ambassador to Nigeria, James Entwistle  who spoke on a live interview monitored in Abuja predicted that the country was gradually moving forward to a very bright future.
He said: "It is a ridiculous assertion. Here we are sitting in Nigeria in 2015, do any of you see any signs of this country breaking up? I don’t. I see Nigeria in a challenging time, nonetheless gradually moving forward to a very bright future and the United States looks forward to working with you towards that bright future. When I spend time with young Nigerians, I can’t help but have a strong optimism about this country."
Speaking on the forthcoming general election, the Ambassador assured that his country would continue to provide support to Nigeria in its election process.
He also asserted that “in a democratic election there is no place for violence.
“Every time I call on a politician or a candidate in this country, I ask him or her if they will publicly take a non-violence pledge on camera. Commit themselves to not fomenting or condoning violence before, during or after the elections.
“I have been very happy to see that Nigerian civil society, Nigerian media and entertainers like 2Face with his ‘vote, not fight’ campaign has picked up this project.
“The accountability aspect of this is crucial.
“I believe in the democracy and I have observed elections around the world and there is no place for violence.
“One thing I have observed as a key benchmark in democratic rule in any country is when the loser comes out to accept results.
“We can make violence unacceptable in public arena."
While also expressing optimism that the election would be credible, the Ambassador also called on Nigerians to support the Independent National Electoral Commission.
“The US supports Nigerian people in the election. We support the process rather than any outcome of the process," he said.

Nigerian troops `fighting back against Boko Haram`: Govt

Abuja: Nigeria`s government on Friday said that troops had begun a fightback against Boko Haram after the militants captured a key northeastern town and overran a military base last weekend.
The Islamists first attacked Baga, in the north of remote Borno state, on Saturday and on Wednesday set fire to the town and razed at least 16 towns and villages nearby.
Mike Omeri, who speaks on national security, said security forces had been "actively pursuing the militants" since the first attack and after the second.
"Security forces have responded rapidly and have deployed significant military assets and conducted airstrikes against militant targets," Omeri told reporters in Abuja.
There were fears of heavy casualties in the attacks, according to local reports, but it was not possible to obtain independent corroboration of the figures cited.
Local officials in and around Baga told AFP on Wednesday that at least 20,000 people were forced to flee their homes and that 560 had been stranded on an island on Lake Chad since Saturday.
Omeri said the country`s emergency management agency was helping 2,000 people displaced from Baga, while other agencies, including the Red Cross, were ready to assist when security allows.
Boko Haram has for the last six months captured dozens of towns and villages in northeast Nigeria as part of its aim to establish a hardline Islamic state.
The Baga attack effectively gave it control of all three frontiers of Borno state with neighbouring Niger, Chad and Cameroon, increasing fears of cross-border attacks.
Security analysts this week said that the militants were now in a better position to strike south towards the Borno state capital, Maiduguri, where the group was founded in 2002.
It has also cast doubt on the ability to hold general elections in the affected areas, scheduled for next month.
Andrew Noakes, of the Nigerian Security Network of analysts, said the assault on Baga may have targeted civilian vigilantes assisting the military after a series of previous strikes.
"Boko Haram had pledged to punish CJTF (civilian joint task force) members and it looks likely Baga was treated with such brutality to do exactly that, and to send a message to other vigilantes," he said in an email exchange.
"There will undoubtedly now be questions about the utility of the CJTF."
Nigeria`s government maintains it is on top of the situation, despite repeated claims of a lack of military presence in the region and complaints from soldiers about inadequate weapons and kit.
Omeri condemned the latest attacks as "brutal and barbaric" and said they represented "none of the people of Nigeria and no religion".
"The government of Nigeria will not rest until Boko Haram is completely dismantled," he added.
"The government values every town, every community and every Nigerian equally. No inch of Nigerian soil will remain in the hands of these terrorists."

Chelsea transfer news and rumours: Will Chelsea swoop for £500m Lionel Messi

Chelsea are considering an eye-watering £500 million move for Barcelona star Lionel Messi.

'FED UP LIONEL MESSI' TO LEAVE BARCELONA
Lionel Messi will quit La Liga giants Barcelona in the summer if either Chelsea or Manchester City come up with a mammoth £500 million. That's the latest news coming out of The Sun, who quote a 'top source' as saying, "Leo's minded to leave Barca. He is completely fed up with so many things at the club that it is difficult to see a way forward."
OUR VIEW
Only a few days ago, this story would have seemed utterly ridiculous - despite the nonsensical suggestion that the price would be £500m, when it is an open secret that Messi's release clause is actually 250 million Euros - which is just under £200m (The Sun's piece does actually acknowledge this, and slips in the fact that their fanciful £500m is transfer fee plus wages over six years. Not that you'd know it from looking at the back page.) Yet following Messi's benching against Real Sociedad on Sunday, the sacking of sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta and the resignation of Carlos Puyol, this has actually got people thinking that it could really happen. Chelsea have denied they can afford him but this is the transfer window - anything can happen.;

LUIS SUAREZ TO KISS GOODBYE TO BARCELONA

Barcelona's Luis Suarez (Reuters)
Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea are all on red alert over the possible availability of Luis Suarez, a report claims.
The Daily Mail reports that the Uruguayan's future in Spain is far from certain following the dismissal of director of football Andoni Zubizarreta and the resignation of his assistant Carles Puyol this week, with England's four biggest clubs all said to be "monitoring the situation".
Although the Catalans are understood to want to hang on to the former Liverpool hitman, at least for the moment, a change of regime at the club in the summer following elections in June, could see Suarez deemed surplus to requirements after an indifferent start to the 2014-15 campaign under Luis Enrique.
The 27-year-old is coming under increasing pressure to find his goalscoring form after moving from Liverpool last July for a reported 94m Euros, having hit the back of the net just three times in 12 games, and the English quartet are keeping abreast of his situation.
Even so, Suarez's position at Barca is further complicated by the Court of Arbitration for Sport's ruling to uphold the transfer ban imposed on the club for breaking the rules regarding young players from outside Spain, meaning they would be unable to bring in a suitable replacement.
OUR VIEW
If it weren't for the transfer ban, this story would seem plausible given the turmoil at Camp Nou. After all, if even Lionel Messi is up for grabs then the only thing off limits is probably a change of the club strip to pink and green stripes. Furthermore, presidential elections for Spain's big two often swing on promises of big signings - so if Andreu Bartomeu is turfed out, it might well be because a rival candidate can deliver another top striker. If that were to be, say, Sergio Aguero then Suarez could indeed be cut loose to make way and keep FFP rules at bay...
But there IS a transfer ban, and one that is not likely to be lifted despite Barcelona's insistence that a higher Swiss court might yet overturn FIFA, FIFA's appeals committee, and the all-knowing Court of Arbitration for Sport. And while the ban remains, Barca will absolutely not let Suarez go.

LIONEL MESSI ULTIMATUM: 'SACK LUIS ENRIQUE, OR I LEAVE!'
It’s been a shocking few days at Barcelona, but the bust-up between Messi and Enrique has come to a head, and one of the pair will leave the club, according to reports on the continent.
OUR VIEW: Messi worth £250 million? We frankly doubt that anyone would pay half that sum given (a) his form this year and (b) this apparent outburst of bolshiness. Not to mention the havoc that such a signing would wreak on a team's hopes of staying on the right side of the FFP rules. That won't stop Chelsea fans getting excited though.

The big news in Spain is that Messi is believed to be unhappy at Barcelona after a fall out with coach Luis Enrique. The forward sparked more transfer speculation by following Chelsea on Instagram last night and, as reported by the Daily Star, odds have now tumbled on the Argentina superstar ending up at Stamford Bridge. The odds are as low as 5/1.

Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets will turn down offers from Premier League clubs including Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United to sign a new contract with the Catalan giants. That’s according to the Daily Star, who report that "Barca have made extending his contract as priority and will offer him a new deal next month."
OUR VIEW: The versatile Spaniard has been linked with a move to the Premier League for a while but he has been an increasingly influential member of Luis Enrique’s side who lag only a point behind Real Madrid in La Liga. He will surely stay put.
