WhatSim will let you access WhatsApp anywhere in the world without a data connection
By tech2 News Staff /
WhatsApp is the most popular mode of communication these days. The popularity of the app has now led an Italian company to launch a new SIM called WhatSim, a  SIM that lets you use the messaging service even on roaming without the need for Wi-Fi or data connection.
According to Manuel Zanella , the inventor of the card and also the founder and CEO of Zeromobile, WhatsApp is used by everyone but the only ‘limits’ come in the form of data connection, especially while travelling.
So, how does it work? WhatSim is compatible with 400 operators across the world and works in about 150 countries. It easily connects to a provider network and in case you change your position, it automatically searches for a new provider. In case a provider with better signal is available, then it automatically connects by itself without the user even noticing it, explains the company.
The SIM could not only be a boon for anyone who loves to travel. This way, they can stay connected with their dear ones, without incurring any roaming charges.
The WhatSim costs €10 that translates to approximately Rs 714. At this price, you can chat for free all over the world for a year. WhatSim has neither fixed costs nor monthly payments and it never expires, claims the company.
However where multimedia exchange such as Photos, Videos, Audio Clips are concerned, it will require users to recharge and the number of credits you require to share this content will depend on which zone your country falls into, says WhatSim.
India is currently in Zone 3 and users will need 150 credits for photo, 600 credits for sharing video messages, 30 credits for voice messages. Contact and location shares don’t require credits. Each recharge of €5 gets users 1000 credits and recharges can go up to a maximum of €50 (10,000 credits). So if you want to share photos, etc in India, you will have to shell out some money.
Zanella also plans to launch a special version of WhatSim inspired by Pope Francis and designed for those countries of the world that the UN calls the Global South. In some of these countries, he wants to sell the WhatSim for €5.

  • Citing a "trusted source," BGR has provided a detailed list of specs for Samsung's (OTC:SSNLF) upcoming Galaxy S6. Among the specs: A 5.1" quad HD (2560x1440) display, an 8-core CPU (presumably Samsung Exynos) that relies on Samsung/Globalfoundries' new 14nm manufacturing process, a 20MP rear camera with optical image stabilization, and a 5MP front camera with a large f/1.8 aperture (good for low-light shots).
  • Samsung's next-gen flagship is also said to use Corning's (NYSE:GLW) Gorilla Glass 4, which was launched only in November and offers improved durability. With other reports stating the S6 will have glass panels on both its front and back (to go with a metal frame), two Gorilla Glass 4 panels might be used.
  • Wireless charging is reportedly supported, along with a rapid charging feature that enables four hours of usage on a 10-minute charge. Dougherty thinks IDT (NASDAQ:IDTI) has a decent chance of being the S6's wireless charging IC supplier, and that a design win could yield $112M-$135M in annual revenue.
  • Samsung is believed to be prepping both a standard S6 model, and one with curved edges. The S6 is expected to be revealed on March 2, the first day of this year's Mobile World Congress.
  • Following a rough 2014, the Korean tech giant appears hungry to deliver new high-end models that stand out relative to the offerings of share-gaining Chinese OEMs. IDC estimates Samsung had a 23.8% Q4 global smartphone share, down from 32.5% a year earlier.

NIGERIA: Lagos Orders Removal of Jonathan’s Campaign Posters

pro-President Goodluck Jonathan campaign group, Transformation Ambassadors of Nigeria (TAN), to remove the president’s campaign materials from the highways and streets in the state, citing the group’s failure to comply with its regulation on outdoor advertising.

The state government said its directive became imperative due to the termination of about N350 million contracts with outdoor agencies duly registered with Lagos Advertising and Signage Agency (LASAA).

The agency’s Managing Director, Mr. George Noah, issued the directives at a news conference he addressed in Alausa yesterday, noting that if TAN failed to heed the order, its enforcement team would remove the posters in line with the enabling law setting up the agency.

At the conference, Noah said the agency was constrained by recent in the electioneering campaign in Lagos to bring to the fore the impunity and illegality that posed immeasurable and long term damage to those who erect, operate and maintain billboards in the state.

Noah said the agency had been informed that in the last 48 hours, two advertisers in the outdoor sector had terminated multi-million naira contracts with outdoor agencies registered by LASAA to operate in the state.

He stated that the contracts had been terminated as a result of the parallel and illegal deployment of Jonathan campaign materials on poles paid for by these advertisers.

“The two advertisers in question are Chinese Telecoms firm, Huawei and Glo Nigeria and the outdoor agencies affected are Touch Point Limited and Clearedge Limited. Both agencies have lost a whooping N350 million.

“The illegal and brazen act by agents of the Peopled Democratic Party (PDP), is unjust, inconsiderate and therefore unacceptable at a time outdoor advertising is facing stiff competition from television, radio and social media

“The illegal act by the agents of the PDP is capable of destroying outdoor agencies in our state. It will almost certainly leads to lay-off of workers and loss of revenue for our stakeholders,” he stated.

Noah added that in line with the agency’s statutory functions to regulate and control outdoor in Lagos, the agency hereby “directs the TAN and its affiliates to remove all campaign materials illegally deployed on street lamp poles in Lagos State immediately, failing which our enforcement team will remove same in line with the enabling law setting up LASAA.”

He also alleged that the PDP agents had been removing the advert materials of Glo on poles which the telecom company paid in a bit to replace them with Jonathan’s posters.

Noah further alleged that the PDP had deployed policemen wherever these impunities were taken place to give them cover and safeguard their illegal act, adding that the police authorities had withdrawn the policemen attached to the agency to assist it in enforcing illegality in the outdoor industry.

“What they have done is to withdraw the policemen attached to us. They are using the police to fester an illegal act. They are coming to Lagos to disrupt the outdoor business worth about N50 billion and employs about 100,000 people. They have transferred all sorts of people to Lagos State to do their dirty jobs. It is one illegality gone too far.”

The problem with Buhari’s candidacy

buhari
BY JASON OGUEJIOFOR
It was the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo who once said, in answer to the late zik’s assertion that we should forget our differences, that it was better instead for us to understand our differences, as a more sustainable path to nation-building. Awo’s argument was that it was difficult to wish away our differences because they did, in fact, exist and that, in the end, a man would be a good Yoruba man, or Igbo man or Hausa man first before identifying himself or being identified as a good Nigerian.
One couldn’t agree more with Chief Awolowo. For, every one of us, indeed, comes from a tribe– from President Goodluck Jonathan, Olusegun Obasanjo to Muhammadu Buhari. The problem arises when, because of several factors, including lack of personal depth and appreciation of the demands of co-existence in a plural society, we allow our tribal sentiments to becloud our sense of duty and obligations to, and respect of, others with whom we share a common destiny as citizens of one country. It becomes even more tragic, for both the individual and country, if the one who has such limited understanding of life outside his or her tribal domain is an aspiring national leader.
That is the problem I find with the candidacy of APC presidential flag bearer, Major-General Muhammadu Buhari. It is the fact that, by actions and utterance, he seems to exhibit scant national sentiments. With all due respect, the man, in my view, is too much of a proud and self-righteous sectional hero who sees others as culturaly and religiously inferior. The examples are legion–of how Buhari has demonstrated over time, in actions and words, that he lacks the the sentiments of a national leader and the predisposition, even grooming, to work with others and treat them as equal partners in a plural setup such as ours.
Dr. Femi Aribisala eloquently captured what he called ‘Buhari’s crimes’in his Tuesday column in Vanguard which ran under the broader headline ‘Time to disgrace the self-appointed godfather of the South- West. I will borrow a lot of the examples in that write-up. But, first, let me start from the one I know very well. Gabriel Owoh and I were classmates and friends in Community Secondary School, Udi, Enugu State, way back in the late 70’s and early 80’s. His elder bother, the quiet, good looking Bartholomew Owoh used to come visiting and Gabe, as we used to call him, would call us his friends to come greet his brother. Imagine, then, the anguish all of us, Gabe’s friends that is, felt when Buhari’s high-handed military government, acting on an obnoxious, retroactive law, snuffed the life out of the young man for drug trafficking, acting on the provision of an obnoxious, retroactive law! It’s like making a law in 2016 to punish a crime committed this year, just to make so-called examples of three hapless young men who probably didn’t know what they were getting into. And you know why? Because Saudi Arabia after which Buhari wanted to model Nigerian law and jurisprudence, had already started beheading drug traffickers.
Alex Ekwueme was Vice President to Alhaji Shehu Shagari (the old man has, by the way, conducted himself rather admirably as a former president and elder statesman). After he overthrew Shagari’s government, Buhari, in a most grotesque reversal of roles, sent Ekwueme who had no executive powers to award contracts or steal money, to Ikoyi maximum prison while Shagari was kept under house arrest in a government guest house in the same Ikoyi. Military tribunals that he set up sentenced Jim Nwobodo, Sam Mbakwe, then governors of Anambra and Imo States, to hundreds of years in prison on charges of corruption that were not properly investigated. Similarly, they jailed cerebral Professor Ambrose Alli, then governor of Bendel State and Bisi Onabanjo of Ogun State; both of them never recovered from the ill-treatment meted out to them in prison by Buhari’s soldiers. His regime sent Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, who never held public office, to Kirikiri Maximum Prison where he was until the Babangida coup of August 1985. The late Michael Ajasin, the first executive governor of old Ondo State was kept in Prison even after they were discharged and acquitted by the same court set up by Buhari to try politicians for corruption.
Aribisala recalls that while Buhari jailed the legendary Fela Anikulapo- Kuti for ‘non-declaration’ of foreign currencies he had legitimately obtained for the upkeep of his band abroad, he conveniently allowed the Emir of Gwandu, a prince of the Caliphate, to bring in 53 suitcases whose contents were not declared to Customs, while a currency-change exercise was going on in the country. “He did not just brutalize Chief (Olu) Awotesu (Shagari’s minister of state for agriculture who was detained for nearly two years without trial) and his family,” Aribisala further wrote. “He did the same to Tai Solarin, who was denied medication for his asthmatic condition while in Buhari’s gulag; Ayo Oyewunmi who became blind in Buhari’s detention and Busari Adelakun who died of chronic ulcer, complications developed in Buhari’s jail.” He also recalls that Buhari’s Supreme Military Council (SMC), the highest military ruling body in the country had 16 members, comprising 11 northerners and 5 southerners, including one Yoruba.
Unable to garner enough votes to defeat President Jonathan in the 2011 Presidential election, an angry Buhari vowed that the “dogs and baboons will be soaked in blood.” And verily verily, his vow came to pass. The post election violence in Northern Nigeria on account of Buhari’s transparent loss to Jonathan destroyed lives and property worth billions of naria. Needless to say, the incident again set the North back by many years.
At the outset of the war against Boko Haram, Buhari was quoted on several occasions as declaring that a ‘clampdown on Boko Haram was an injustice against the North.’ He was specifically quoted by Thisday Online thus: ‘Buhari: Military Offensive against Boko Haram, Anti-North’.
In 2001, in the heat of the Sharia crisis triggered by the ‘pure’ implementation of the Islamic law in Zamfara State following the cutting-off of the hand of a thief named Jangebi, as punishment for stealing, Buhari, a former head of state, reportedly told a seminar in Kaduna: “I will continue to show openly and inside me the total commitment to the Sharia movement that is sweeping all over Nigeria…God willing, we will not stop the agitation for the total implementation of the Sharia in the country…” Why would the promotion of Sharia law throughout secular, multi-religious Nigeria be the primary occupation of a former military head of state and an aspiring democratic leader, you would ask.
Other examples abound–of Gen. Buhari’s seeming rigid commitment to the cause of the North and Islam in Nigeria such that he appears unable to place himself over and above his primordial interests. As a multi-ethnic, multi-religious country, Nigeria requires a God-fearing leader who will not pander to his ethnic and or religious interests but will be firm in ruling over the country on the basis of equity, justice and fair play. Given such history of bias against people of other faiths and cultures in his official and private conduct, can Buhari be trusted to lead plural Nigeria? At 72, a man is set in his ways. The question is, at 72, can Buhari change? As they say, ask the leopard.

Independent Electoral Commission, INEC, yesterday put the death toll arising from electoral violence in the country between 1999 and 2015 at over 11,000, saying the negative trend has assumed a dangerous dimension.
To this end, the commission called on security agencies to check the proliferation of small arms in the country to curb incessant violence during elections as the 2015 elections gather momentum.
Resident Electoral Commissioner, INEC, Bayelsa State, Mr. Baritor Kpagih, who stated this in Bayelsa State on Wednesday during a one-day sensitisation seminar for officers and men of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, said combing the nooks and crannies of the country to mop up small arms was a panacea for avoiding electoral violence.
Represented by the state’s Head of Voter Registration, Mr. Victor EgbonwanKpagih, he said: “We know there are small arms everywhere. If we look out for them we will be able to contain electoral violence.
“The NSCDC and other security agencies have a lot to do to make 2015 general elections a success,” adding that if statistics were available up-to-date, the number would have increased, particularly after the 2011 polls.
He called for good governance, enhanced security and responsible leadership from politicians as well as highly ethical reportage from the media as some indicators that would guarantee free elections.
EgbonwanKpagih said, “From the perspective of INEC, efforts to make the polls as good as possible began immediately after the 2011 general elections.
“Today, we have the best Voters Register ever in Nigeria. The voting process has been refined and streamlined, albeit the entire electoral process has been imbued with a large dose of technology that would help bring about a number of checks and balances.”
In his remark, Commandant, NSCDC, Bayelsa State, Mr. Desmond Agu, said his officers and men were fully prepared for the general elections in the state.
He advised his operatives to be wary of politicians, saying they should be guided by ethics of the service.
Agu said the command organised the seminar to sensitise officers and men of their roles as well as to assure the civil populace, eligible voters and politicians of its avowed commitment in maintaining law and order in conjunction with other security agencies.

Top-6 Reasons On Why Men Cheat More Then Women

Surely, not all the guys are cheating. But some of them are more likely to get involved in an affair.
Here are some reasons on why Nigerian guys are more likely to cheat than women:
1. He feels that he could have more
A lot of Nigerian guys believe that with money they can get any girl. When they start earning a lot of money, the desire for a side chick grows. Money can be very tempting. A guy begins to think that he could have everything he wants.
2. Flirt is in their blood
3. It is their ‘revenge’
After the next scandal he could have an affair. He thinks that it is his revenge and this is she who should be blamed. Sometimes they broke up after this, but she is likely to forgive him.
4. There is a lot of girls who don’t mind
There always some girls who like them. If they lack some self-confidence and are too desperate they don’t mind having an affair. They might be trying to get your attention or to get any guy possible. Yes, you have a girlfriend and they know it, but it doesn’t matter for them.
5. Some girls want to be more than just being friends
Some of his female friends want something more than friendship. They know he is in relationships, nevertheless they dream about becoming his wife. And if they are being too nice with him an affair could happen.

The messages on twitter that he was still alive were from a fake account.

So this is my pain, how do you know what to believe and what not to believe? Where do we draw the line? Over nine thousand people on twitter believed that he was still alive because of a fake twitter account.
REST In PEACE Bro, I was hoping that it was a rumour. God rest your soul. This is so painful.
Whoever put up that message out on fake twitter account should be careful. Don't play games with people's lives like that." - Stella Damasus

Some tweets and Instagram posts have since the announcement of the actor’s death been pouring in.

“My condolences to the family/fans of Muna Obiekwe. May God comfort us all. He was one of a kind. A consummate actor and a light dimmed early. And whoever that fake impostor of Muna is, making mundane capital out of his death on twitter, may that guy be afflicted if he doesn’t repent.” - Charles Novia

Nigeria: INEC Confirms Ownership of Ballot Boxes Intercepted in Ogun

The Ogun Police Command says INEC has confirmed its ownership of the ballot boxes that were intercepted by soldiers on the Benin-Sagamu Expressway.
The spokesperson of the command, Mr Muyiwa Adejobi, told newsmen on Tuesday in Abeokuta that soldiers attached to the 35 Artillery Brigade, Abeokuta, on Tuesday intercepted a truck containing 3,600 ballot boxes.
Adejobi said that the driver and two other passengers of the truck, who could not give satisfactory explanations concerning the boxes were handed over to the police at the Ijebu-Ode Area Command.
He, however, said that INEC, in the course of investigations conducted by the police confirmed that the items were meant for the commission.
"For now, we have been receiving calls from officials of INEC. We have also been getting calls from the agent who is in charge of the delivery of the items.
"INEC has confirmed that the items are meant for them and for delivery to its office at Uyo, Akwa-Ibom state, for the forthcoming general elections.
"We are having 3,600 ballot boxes. The agent, who is in charge of the materials, has not handed over the items to INEC officially.
" But INEC is aware of the importation and the procurement and subsequent distribution of the boxes," he said.
Adejobi, however, insisted that investigations would continue on the case because the police could not rely only on telephone conversations, adding that it required documented evidence.
"For now, we cannot say whether they are fake boxes or not.
" Although we have received calls from INEC to confirm that the boxes are genuine and are property of the agency, but we still want to see documented evidence.
"We want to see papers to confirm the authenticity that INEC actually gave contract to the agent who claimed that the items had been cleared at Apapa Wharf in Lagos before we release the items.
"We have arrested the driver of the truck and taken custody of the items while we will continue investigations.
"If there is no case against the agent, we will release the items, but if otherwise, the law will take its course," he said.

The convoy of President Goodluck Jonathan was attacked by political thugs on Tuesday in Katsina State during the continuation of his re-election campaign.
The thugs are suspected to be loyal to the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), who is from the state.
The convoy of the president, which included Vice President Namadi Sambo; the National Chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Adamu Mu'azu; and Governor Ibrahim Shema of Katsina State among others was attacked during a visit on the late President Umar Yar'Adua's mother, Hajiya Dada.
As President and members of his entourage made their ways into the Yar'Adua Quarters, the brooms-wielding youths who were chanting "Sai Buhari" surged forward.
Security agents had a hectic time dispersing the crowd.
The youths regrouped and again moved to attack the President's convoy as he was ready to leave the Yar'Adua's residence.
Security agents had to fire tear gas canisters to disperse the youths to allow vehicles in the convoy of the President to speed off.
As the presidential delegation made their way towards the Katsina Airport, the youths hurled stones at the convoy.
One of the billboards of the president in the state was also destroyed.

2015 Elections: Why We Introduced Card Readers — INEC

card readerThe Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, on Tuesday said it introduced card readers for voters’ accreditation in order to verify the rightful owners of Permanent Voter Cards, PVCs.
The Electoral Officer for Baruten Local Government Area of Kwara, Abdulganiyu Bello, stated this in Kosubosu at a meeting with stakeholders in the area.
Mr. Bello said the device would avert impersonation and voting by proxy during the general elections.
He urged the electorate to cooperate with INEC officials in ensuring a hitch-free exercise.
“Let’s target peaceful electioneering; I want to urge politicians not to cause any disruption because you believe a particular place is a stronghold of opponents.
“The result in that place might be helpful in the eventual outcome”, he said.
Mr. Bello also said the commission would ensure that no polling unit had more than 750 registered voters.
He added that electoral process in all polling units would hold between 8.00a.m. and 3.00p.m. on election days.
Participants at the meeting had urged INEC to ensure that accreditation begins in all units by 8.00 a.m.
They also appealed to the commission to be patient with voters who wish to clarify issues on election days.

Tottenham make £8m bid for Emenike

Emmanuel Emenike
Tottenham have lodged an £8m bid to sign Fenerbahce striker Emmanuel Emenike.
The Nigeria international has been constantly linked with a move to the Premier League in recent years, with Chelsea and Liverpool both tracking his progress.
The 27-year-old spent two successful seasons at Spartak Moscow from 2011 to 2013, where he scored 24 goals in all competitions.
Despite interest coming from the Premier League, he returned to Fenerbahce but since has failed to hit form due to a number of injuries.
According to Daily Express Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino is hoping to finally bring Emenike to England’s top flight.
The White Hart Lane outfit have had to rely on academy product Harry Kane to provide the goals this term, with experienced forwards Roberto Soldado and Emmanuel Adebayor struggling to find goalscoring form.
Spurs have reportedly tabled an £8m move for Emenike and could announce his arrival as early as next week.

It is a modest one – a six-seater overlooking a tiny shelf housing a 21-inch television set, a video compact disc player and a radio that has seen the best of time, everything in and around the room testifies to the simplicity of its occupant. Now almost 91, with all of his children married and his wife and best friend of many years ‘gone to be with the Lord’, Pa Jacob Kehinde Babajide’s life has become even quieter these days especially since August 2010 when his monthly pension was abruptly stopped. Apart from now having to depend squarely on the financial support of his children to survive, the psychological effect of the entire experience has compounded the old man’s agony.
“Nobody gave me any reason for stopping my pension,” the nonagenarian said, pausing for a few seconds before continuing with the emotional narrative. “I just noticed that I didn’t get alert from the bank anymore. There is this lady I used to contact at the pension office; she was the one who helped me before they paid me some arrears till August 2010. Since then, I haven’t heard anything.
“When I contacted her again, she said I should bring the copy of my pay slip from the bank. I sent it to her, then she phoned back saying I should bring my first letter of appointment which I received on July 10, 1950. Don’t you see they don’t want to pay the money? Where on earth do they expect me to get the letter? If you calculate very well, I got that letter about 64 years ago.
“She told me that the person she normally contacted said unless I brought that letter, a letter which I got before he was born, they would not pay me. But for my sons and daughters, my condition would have been very terrible.”
The last four years have not been easy for the Oke-Igbo, Ondo State-born grandfather– deprivation and challenges have come in different forms. Though, Babajide told Saturday PUNCH that he has no regrets giving 35 years of his life to serving the nation diligently, this was not the type of retirement he looked forward to while joining the accounts department of the now defunct Post and Telegrams under the Ministry of Communications on July 10, 1950. The situation leaves him deeply worried.
“I have an extension behind my flat, the place is almost crumbling. If this money had come, I could have rebuilt it and be living better. Nowadays I depend only on my children to send me money, when they don’t, I suffer.
“While I was in service, I was not looking forward to this type of treatment because I didn’t do any funny act. I worked as honest as possible. This was not the type of reward I was looking ahead to while I was still working.
“I give glory to God that I had been a Christian before I joined the service and I was honest throughout my time there. I was not like other people who would go to meet the senior men and be doing eye service, no. I simply concentrated on my job.
“During my time there, I was always sent to the most difficult sections especially when there was problem but God always helped me out,” he said.
Between 1950 when he joined service and 1985 when he retired, Babajide, by virtue of the position he occupied, had several opportunities to take advantage of the system. But being the honest and reliable man that he is, the trained accountant rebuffed temptations in different forms to discharge his duties as frankly as possible. Taking our correspondent through highlights of his time at the P and T, the old man revealed how corrupt officials turned the tide in their own favour to the detriment of others.
“I had a colleague, we were both Assistant Chief Accountants and I was in the payment section which took care of any form of payments. I was also controlling the votes that came to the department. The man was in parcel section and people who had complaints on parcels would go to him. Some of them who had claims, we had to refund them.
“So, on different occasions, he brought nine vouchers. When I received them and if there were documents that were supposed to be attached, I would ask him to bring them and I would acknowledge them. When I satisfied myself, I authorised the vouchers and sent them to the post office and our bank in the department. When those vouchers were paid, they did not come to me again.
“It continued like that until one day when I got to the office and a senior investigation officer entered and brought out one of the vouchers. He asked if I authorised it because my signature was on it and I said yes. I told him that by the time the vouchers left my table, the attached documents were also intact but after payment, it didn’t return to me and that I didn’t know what was responsible for that. The man at the parcel department called Mr. Leke was very clever. He ate, drank and spent lavishly and I began to wonder where he got such money from. The senior investigation officer was on that case for a year and eventually took the case to court. The man in the parcel department was found guilty and was jailed for a year without the option of fine.
“After the case, I asked the investigation officer if he confirmed from those whose names were on the vouchers if I had ever seen them before or knew them at all. He said it had nothing to do with me. That was an experience I will never forget.
“I was sitting on money but I never for once thought about stealing from the system. But in my old age when I am supposed to be enjoying the fruit of my labour, it is the system that is now robbing me of happiness. I deserve better than this,” he said.
Babajide, who has a fair knowledge of how some of the crimes are perpetrated, told our correspondent that the non-payment of his monthly stipend is the handiwork of corrupt elements within the system and not as a result of government’s failure.
“It’s been a fairly long time since I left service in 1985 and the people preparing the allowances would have thought that I am dead especially when they look at my age. It is something I know people who pay pension do very well. They would say this man must have died, so let us not pay the money into his account anymore, and they now divert it to their personal accounts.
“So, I am sure they must be paying my pension regularly into one of their accounts thinking that I am dead by now at almost 91. I am not surprised that this type of thing is happening. It is not as if government stopped my pension but somebody is paying it into another person’s account thinking that I am dead.
“I am a Christian and in all things, God says I should give thanks. That I sleep and wake up, I thank God. I go to bed smoothly and He wakes me up full of energy. I am really grateful to God,” he said.
Mrs. Bose Daramola who had been helping the 90-year-old to process his monthly entitlements at the pensions office, Abuja, told our correspondent in a telephone interview that she left service about eight years ago and so was not in a good position to render any form of assistance at the moment.
“Baba should go to the pension office in Abuja to complain. Their office is on Katsina-Ala Street in Maitama; if he introduces himself as a pensioner, they might take pity on him and address his case.
“The situation is, there is a regular verification exercise where you must present some vital documents including your confirmation letter and first appointment letter. I told him this several times but I was just doing my best to assist him through the people I know there. I am no longer working at the pension office; I left there eight years ago.
“But maybe if he goes there himself, they can assist him based on his age and condition. Else, he will have to show them those documents before he receives his pension,” she said.
Head of Corporate Communications, Pension Transitional Arrangement Department, Mr. Yusuf Addy, told Saturday PUNCH that at the moment, the office is dealing with verification of police pension after which biometrics and verifications of all other pensioners like Babajide would be done. After the exercise, Addy said pensioners would not be asked to tender any documents again but would be able to have access to their entitlements from anywhere in the country regardless of their point of registration.
However, for the 90-year-old former accountant to continue to access his monthly payment, he might have to present an affidavit sworn at a recognised court including at least a document to prove that he was once and employee of the P and T.
“We feel the pains of the old man but the issue is that he might need to tender a genuine affidavit and at least something to show that he once worked at the P and T. Very soon, a comprehensive verification and biometric exercise would take place, after that nobody would be asked to bring any document again.
“So, the man should try to present these items and the matter would be resolved. Nobody is keeping his pension away from him deliberately. We are here to serve the people diligently,” he said.
Dr. Franca Attoh, a lecturer at the Department of Sociology, University of Lagos, told Saturday PUNCH that the new pension reform act is supposed to have taken care of all pension related matters because it is a contributory scheme where a certain percentage of the worker’s salary is set aside while active. According to her, with the new reform, issue of non-payment or denial has become almost a thing of the past but if anybody is found bending the law in his or her favour to the detriment of those who have invested genuine labour, they must be punished.
“With the new pension reforms, I don’t think anybody should still have complaints. It is a system that does its best to be fair to everyone. But if there are people still complaining of not getting their pensions, then you have to examine what is responsible for that carefully. Some of those people might not be telling the whole truth.
“However, if any official is found to be manipulating the system for personal gains at the expense of those who gave many years of their lives to serving this nation at various capacities, then such people must be made to pay the price. The new pension reform is working, people must understand how it works,” she said.
Babajide is not the only one who has been left to endure a life of agony, pains and heartbreaks after putting in scores of illustrious years serving the country in various capacities – he is only one of many pensioners across Nigeria whose lives have been made miserable following months and years of unpaid entitlements. While dozens have died fighting and waiting for privileges that they truly deserved, pension continues to be far away from the reach of thousands still alive.
I regret teaching for 35 years
In Iganmu, a Lagos suburb, for example, Mrs. Akinbule Fadekemi, is merely surviving on the mercies of God. After putting in more than half of her life into the teaching profession, the 78-year-old mother of three has nothing to show for all her efforts in impacting lives, teaching across several government-established primary schools in Lagos. Today, all Akinbule has is a small plastic cooler on which she displays edible items not worth more than N3, 700. She earns a paltry pensiom of N1,600 every month. The situation is a distant contrast from the future she had looked forward to in 1987 when she completed 35 year in service as a teacher.
“I wish I had done something else with my life and not teaching,” she told our correspondent in a quaking voice – one capable of melting even a heart made of steel. “My mates who went into secretarial studies and other ventures are better off. I look at their lives today and I wish I had never taken to teaching at all. They are far better than me. They are fulfilled and full of happiness. This little cooler is all I have. The amount I get every month cannot sustain me, let alone with my children,” she said.
Mrs. Yetunde Yusuf’s life has not remained the same since those painful experiences in 2012. After losing a pregnant daughter seven days to her wedding and her own husband weeks later because she could not afford the medical cost as a result of unpaid pensions, Yusuf has not regained balance ever since.
Having retired from the Federal Ministry of Defence in 2005, the elderly woman described retirement as the most turbulent period of her life.
“The government employed me when I was still very young, I retired in 2005 and since, I have not been paid my gratuity and pensions. I have suffered so much and even lost my daughter with pregnancy and my husband. Government should please have mercy on me,” she cried.
In Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, Mrs. Katherine Harry is still waiting for her gratuity almost three years after retirement from one of the government liaison offices. Though, now receiving monthly pension, Harry struggles to survive especially with four children, an aged mother and a handful of older relatives to cater for. The last few years have been a mixture of struggle and deprivation for the 61-year-old.
And public holders work out their pension upfront
Sadly, many public office holders across Nigeria who barely spent a quarter of the years the likes of Babajide, Akinbule and Harry put into serving the nation, continue to enjoy bogus pensions and other benefits today. Last year, Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Godswill Akpabio, reviewed the pension and allowances of former chief executives of the state and their deputies. Apart from the outrageous take home package, Akpabio and his deputy after quitting office would get choice houses not only in Uyo, the state capital but also in Abuja the administrative capital of the country. Akpabio is not the only public office holder guilty of this moral ‘crime;’ he merely makes up the numbers in a well-known phenomenon.
Two weeks ago, Senator Bukola Saraki who is representing Kwara Central in the senate announced that he would be donating his pension, which he put at N45m since he left office in 2011 to students in tertiary institutions all over Kwara State.
In two tweets he posted via his handle @bukolasaraki, the ex-governor, who disclosed that he had not accessed any portion of the pension, said it would be made available to students with good grades but who need financial assistance through his foundation, the Abubakar Bukola Saraki Students Foundation.
Ironically, Saraki only spent eight years as governor of the North Central state and the N45m bounty accrued between 2011 and 2014.
However, in the United States and other western nations for example, it is a different ball game entirely for retirees. In addition to getting their gratuity within the first few weeks after retirement, accessing monthly pensions is far easier than in Nigeria.
Bottleneck of greed
To arrest the troubling trend, successive administrations at all tiers of government in Nigeria have come up with various strategies to effectively compensate pensioners. This led to the repeal of the 1979 Act and subsequently the amendment of the Nigerian Social Trust Fund Act of 1993. To further get the system working, the Pension Reform Act, 2004 was promulgated. It was created as a contributory pension scheme for the payment of retirement benefits both for the public and private sectors.
But despite these laudable reforms, accessing gratuity, pension and other entitlements remains a big problem for many retirees. At the forefront of this disturbing trend is corruption on the part of government officials and pension administrators.
In 2013, an investigation into police pensions opened a can of worms about the wanton sleaze in the system. Consulting firm, KPMG, which audited the accounts, found several irregularities and unauthorised transactions and remittances running into billions of naira.
Milking pensioners dry
For instance, N1.5bn was said to have been remitted to the Police Pensions Office monthly, as against the N500m that was actually required while another N24bn was kept in an account meant for the payment of harmonisation arrears. Findings from that investigation rank among one of the biggest corruption scandals anywhere in the world, especially with many of the perpetrators yet to serve jail sentences.
But for the likes of Babajide and thousands of retired civil servants wallowing in abject neglect despite investing years of quality labour into making Nigeria a better society, going hungry to bed was the last many of them wished for in their prime. Only an urgent intervention and change of fortunes could soothe an old man’s bleeding heart.

Buhari can’t remember his phone number –Jonathan

Buhari can’t remember his phone number –Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan
President Goodluck Jonathan on Friday during a rally in Enugu said that the All Progressives Congress candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd), cannot remember his own mobile phone number.
Jonathan, whose unscripted address was mostly a response to previous statements made by Buhari, accused the APC presidential candidate of deceiving Nigerians by promising to revive the economy without explaining how he would achieve the feat.
The President wondered how Buhari would develop the country’s economy, a feat he could not achieve while he was in office as head of state between 1983 and 1985.
“Is it now that Buhari cannot even remember his own phone number that he can change the economy of the country.” Jonathan asked.
The Peoples Democratic Party presidential candidate said that although he did not like to “go personal during campaigns,” “sometimes circumstances demand that certain things must be said.”
Jonathan said that Buhari belonged to the medieval age, adding that he (the APC candidate) intended to run the Federal Government as a medieval king.
He said, “We cannot run the government as if we are in the medieval age; we cannot run a government where somebody said he would throw people into jail.
“You are not a medieval king – a medieval king can throw you into jail but we have to follow the rule of law because we cannot go back to the old days.”
Jonathan, however, read the speech made by Gen. Ibrahim Babangida (rtd.) after overthrowing Buhari’s regime through a military coup on August 27, 1985 to justify his claim that the APC candidate does not keep his promises.
Babangida, in the portions of the address read by Jonathan, justified Buhari’s overthrow by pointing out that the latter did not live up to the promises he made to Nigerians when he ousted a democratically elected civilian government headed by Alhaji Shehu Shagari in a military coup.
Noting that Buhari “deceived Nigerians” from 1983 to 1985, Jonathan quoted Babangida as saying, “The initial objectives of Buhari’s intervention were betrayed as there was a general deterioration of standard of living in the country.”
The PDP candidate also pointed out that Babangida accused Buhari of being “too rigid in his attitude to national issues” and “became alienated from the people” in the course of his stay in power.
He, therefore, challenged Buhari to tell Nigerians how he intends to revive the economy.
Jonathan said, “They are telling young Nigerians that they are going to change the economy but they have not told us how they want to manage the economy more than us.
“If they say they want to change agriculture, they should tell us the weak links in the agriculture value chain and what they want to do about it.
“I said in Lagos that I want to work with young people, not to deceive people.
“I am not going to run the government based on my habits, I am going to run the government according to global best practices.”
Jonathan also insisted that he was committed to the campaign against corruption.
“There is no government that has fought corruption more than we do,” he said, noting that some previous administrations pretended to be fighting corruption while oppressing their enemies.
He recalled that Buhari jailed some prominent Igbo politicians while in office as head of state, including former Vice-President Alex Ekwueme and former governor of old Anambra State, Chief Jim Nwobodo.
Stressing that Buhari jailed politicians on trumped up charges, Jonathan said, “You can no longer carry people and put them in prison for 301 years.”
The President equally accused Buhari of having a wrong idea of corruption.
According to him, Buhari believes that every wealthy Nigerian is corrupt.
He said, “If a Nigerian businessman has a private jet, then you are corrupt but if a South African has a private jet then you commend him.
“If you have a good house, then you are corrupt, if you have a good car then you are corrupt – that is his definition of corruption.”
Jonathan accused his opponent of making spurious claims against him.
The President said, “They are saying that government is corrupt but they are not telling us what they are going to do to stop corruption. Let them go back to their consultants to coach them, then I will listen to them.
“They should tell us how they are going to manage the economy better than we do.
“They are saying we stole foreign reserves, nobody can steal foreign reserves – spurious allegations.”
He also reiterated his claim that Buhari did not equip the military while he was the head of state.
Jonathan said that he had done more than his predecessors to shore up the country’s defence.
“For 30 years, we had only one frigate, now we have four additional frigates,” he said.
In the same vein, he pointed out that Buhari did not find any woman worthy enough for appointment when he was the military head of state.
The President asked Nigerians to assess him and Buhari by looking at how they performed during their respective periods in office.
He said, “They have deceived us before and they want to deceive us again.
“Go and find out whether these people are deceiving you or are telling you the truth.
“People are assessing me because I have run this country for some years – they have run this country for two years.
“They came with promises but immediately they came in, what they did was to jail Jim Nwobodo for 201 years.”

The suspect in his statement said that he was introduced to methamphetamine production by a friend. “I only attended Primary and Secondary School before I went into trading. A friend introduced me to the business of chemical importation from China and Europe in 2012. A year later, I learnt how to produce methamphetamine because there is high profit in it. I began to produce methamphetamine in my house in 2013. My first production was bad because of inexperience. Gradually, I was able to perfect the process. That was how I got involved in the drug business” Charles stated.

Similarly, the Lagos State command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has won 123 convictions at the Federal High Court Lagos in 2014. D. Idris for possession of 3kg of cannabis. 118 cases were pending as at December 31, 2014.
Lanre Salami who was arrested at Oshodi lied to the court that he was 15 years old. The court later discovered that he was actually 17 years old. He was sentenced to 10 years for unlawful dealing in 400 grammes of cannabis. Salisu Usman, 42, was apprehended at Iddo Motor Park on his way to Zamfara, his home State with 47kg of diazepam. Chairman/Chief Executive of the NDLEA, Ahmadu Giade assured members of the public that drug traffickers shall not go unpunished. In his words, “the NDLEA will continue to enforce the provisions of the Act and bring offenders to justice. Let me assure members of the public that no drug dealer shall go unpunished. Suspected drug traffickers should be reported to the nearest NDLEA office”. Stressing that parents should teach their children to avoid drug trafficking and abuse.

No sign of Nigeria breaking up in 2015- US
By Victor Iluyemi
Nigeria and USA flags

WorldStage Newsonline-- The United States (US) on Friday said that though Nigeria might be in a challenging time, there is no sign that it will break up in 2015 as asserted in some quarters.
US Ambassador to Nigeria, James Entwistle  who spoke on a live interview monitored in Abuja predicted that the country was gradually moving forward to a very bright future.
He said: "It is a ridiculous assertion. Here we are sitting in Nigeria in 2015, do any of you see any signs of this country breaking up? I don’t. I see Nigeria in a challenging time, nonetheless gradually moving forward to a very bright future and the United States looks forward to working with you towards that bright future. When I spend time with young Nigerians, I can’t help but have a strong optimism about this country."
Speaking on the forthcoming general election, the Ambassador assured that his country would continue to provide support to Nigeria in its election process.
He also asserted that “in a democratic election there is no place for violence.
“Every time I call on a politician or a candidate in this country, I ask him or her if they will publicly take a non-violence pledge on camera. Commit themselves to not fomenting or condoning violence before, during or after the elections.
“I have been very happy to see that Nigerian civil society, Nigerian media and entertainers like 2Face with his ‘vote, not fight’ campaign has picked up this project.
“The accountability aspect of this is crucial.
“I believe in the democracy and I have observed elections around the world and there is no place for violence.
“One thing I have observed as a key benchmark in democratic rule in any country is when the loser comes out to accept results.
“We can make violence unacceptable in public arena."
While also expressing optimism that the election would be credible, the Ambassador also called on Nigerians to support the Independent National Electoral Commission.
“The US supports Nigerian people in the election. We support the process rather than any outcome of the process," he said.

Nigerian troops `fighting back against Boko Haram`: Govt

Abuja: Nigeria`s government on Friday said that troops had begun a fightback against Boko Haram after the militants captured a key northeastern town and overran a military base last weekend.
The Islamists first attacked Baga, in the north of remote Borno state, on Saturday and on Wednesday set fire to the town and razed at least 16 towns and villages nearby.
Mike Omeri, who speaks on national security, said security forces had been "actively pursuing the militants" since the first attack and after the second.
"Security forces have responded rapidly and have deployed significant military assets and conducted airstrikes against militant targets," Omeri told reporters in Abuja.
There were fears of heavy casualties in the attacks, according to local reports, but it was not possible to obtain independent corroboration of the figures cited.
Local officials in and around Baga told AFP on Wednesday that at least 20,000 people were forced to flee their homes and that 560 had been stranded on an island on Lake Chad since Saturday.
Omeri said the country`s emergency management agency was helping 2,000 people displaced from Baga, while other agencies, including the Red Cross, were ready to assist when security allows.
Boko Haram has for the last six months captured dozens of towns and villages in northeast Nigeria as part of its aim to establish a hardline Islamic state.
The Baga attack effectively gave it control of all three frontiers of Borno state with neighbouring Niger, Chad and Cameroon, increasing fears of cross-border attacks.
Security analysts this week said that the militants were now in a better position to strike south towards the Borno state capital, Maiduguri, where the group was founded in 2002.
It has also cast doubt on the ability to hold general elections in the affected areas, scheduled for next month.
Andrew Noakes, of the Nigerian Security Network of analysts, said the assault on Baga may have targeted civilian vigilantes assisting the military after a series of previous strikes.
"Boko Haram had pledged to punish CJTF (civilian joint task force) members and it looks likely Baga was treated with such brutality to do exactly that, and to send a message to other vigilantes," he said in an email exchange.
"There will undoubtedly now be questions about the utility of the CJTF."
Nigeria`s government maintains it is on top of the situation, despite repeated claims of a lack of military presence in the region and complaints from soldiers about inadequate weapons and kit.
Omeri condemned the latest attacks as "brutal and barbaric" and said they represented "none of the people of Nigeria and no religion".
"The government of Nigeria will not rest until Boko Haram is completely dismantled," he added.
"The government values every town, every community and every Nigerian equally. No inch of Nigerian soil will remain in the hands of these terrorists."

Chelsea transfer news and rumours: Will Chelsea swoop for £500m Lionel Messi

Chelsea are considering an eye-watering £500 million move for Barcelona star Lionel Messi.

'FED UP LIONEL MESSI' TO LEAVE BARCELONA
Lionel Messi will quit La Liga giants Barcelona in the summer if either Chelsea or Manchester City come up with a mammoth £500 million. That's the latest news coming out of The Sun, who quote a 'top source' as saying, "Leo's minded to leave Barca. He is completely fed up with so many things at the club that it is difficult to see a way forward."
OUR VIEW
Only a few days ago, this story would have seemed utterly ridiculous - despite the nonsensical suggestion that the price would be £500m, when it is an open secret that Messi's release clause is actually 250 million Euros - which is just under £200m (The Sun's piece does actually acknowledge this, and slips in the fact that their fanciful £500m is transfer fee plus wages over six years. Not that you'd know it from looking at the back page.) Yet following Messi's benching against Real Sociedad on Sunday, the sacking of sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta and the resignation of Carlos Puyol, this has actually got people thinking that it could really happen. Chelsea have denied they can afford him but this is the transfer window - anything can happen.;

LUIS SUAREZ TO KISS GOODBYE TO BARCELONA

Barcelona's Luis Suarez (Reuters)
Barcelona's Luis Suarez (Reuters)
Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea are all on red alert over the possible availability of Luis Suarez, a report claims.
The Daily Mail reports that the Uruguayan's future in Spain is far from certain following the dismissal of director of football Andoni Zubizarreta and the resignation of his assistant Carles Puyol this week, with England's four biggest clubs all said to be "monitoring the situation".
Although the Catalans are understood to want to hang on to the former Liverpool hitman, at least for the moment, a change of regime at the club in the summer following elections in June, could see Suarez deemed surplus to requirements after an indifferent start to the 2014-15 campaign under Luis Enrique.
The 27-year-old is coming under increasing pressure to find his goalscoring form after moving from Liverpool last July for a reported 94m Euros, having hit the back of the net just three times in 12 games, and the English quartet are keeping abreast of his situation.
Even so, Suarez's position at Barca is further complicated by the Court of Arbitration for Sport's ruling to uphold the transfer ban imposed on the club for breaking the rules regarding young players from outside Spain, meaning they would be unable to bring in a suitable replacement.
OUR VIEW
If it weren't for the transfer ban, this story would seem plausible given the turmoil at Camp Nou. After all, if even Lionel Messi is up for grabs then the only thing off limits is probably a change of the club strip to pink and green stripes. Furthermore, presidential elections for Spain's big two often swing on promises of big signings - so if Andreu Bartomeu is turfed out, it might well be because a rival candidate can deliver another top striker. If that were to be, say, Sergio Aguero then Suarez could indeed be cut loose to make way and keep FFP rules at bay...
But there IS a transfer ban, and one that is not likely to be lifted despite Barcelona's insistence that a higher Swiss court might yet overturn FIFA, FIFA's appeals committee, and the all-knowing Court of Arbitration for Sport. And while the ban remains, Barca will absolutely not let Suarez go.

LIONEL MESSI ULTIMATUM: 'SACK LUIS ENRIQUE, OR I LEAVE!'
It’s been a shocking few days at Barcelona, but the bust-up between Messi and Enrique has come to a head, and one of the pair will leave the club, according to reports on the continent.
OUR VIEW: Messi worth £250 million? We frankly doubt that anyone would pay half that sum given (a) his form this year and (b) this apparent outburst of bolshiness. Not to mention the havoc that such a signing would wreak on a team's hopes of staying on the right side of the FFP rules. That won't stop Chelsea fans getting excited though.

The big news in Spain is that Messi is believed to be unhappy at Barcelona after a fall out with coach Luis Enrique. The forward sparked more transfer speculation by following Chelsea on Instagram last night and, as reported by the Daily Star, odds have now tumbled on the Argentina superstar ending up at Stamford Bridge. The odds are as low as 5/1.
OUR VIEW: Is it really possible that Messi could leave his one and only club? Here's Tom Adams with his take...

Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets will turn down offers from Premier League clubs including Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United to sign a new contract with the Catalan giants. That’s according to the Daily Star, who report that "Barca have made extending his contract as priority and will offer him a new deal next month."
OUR VIEW: The versatile Spaniard has been linked with a move to the Premier League for a while but he has been an increasingly influential member of Luis Enrique’s side who lag only a point behind Real Madrid in La Liga. He will surely stay put.
